Snetterton Civic Cup Finale Race Report Snetterton is my favourite UK track, so I was excited to be racing the final Civic Cup race of the season here, however I have never driven the 200 circuit layout, arriving late afternoon on Saturday, I had a track walk and got my head around the track, despite the track walk being in lovely calm October conditions, the weather forecast for Sundays racing was dire.
Sunday came, along with all the predicted rain, Jumping straight into qualifying it was very wet on the 200 layout of Snetterton but despite this I adapted quickly and didn’t have too many scary moments, I stayed out for the whole session to allow myself as much practice in the wet as possible, after some good laps I was very happy to come in and find out I was on pole position in class for the first race. The rain came down again just as we were heading out for Race 1, it was even wetter than qualifying and this was a completely new experience to me having never driven in conditions this wet before, ever! I got quite a bad launch but then found my self on the inside of the hairpin which allowed me to retake P1 from here it was just about keeping consistency up and mistakes down which I managed to do for the most part and came home P1 in class with fastest lap. Race 2, the sun was fading and the temperature had dramatically dropped, but it had stopped raining, it was a reverse grid, so I started from the back of the pack, the track was very greasy. I had a better start than race 1, I put my head down and tried to avoid any spinning cars and chaos on the track ahead of me, I managed a couple of overtakes and by the end of lap 1 I was in the lead of my class and catching some quicker cup class cars, I kept this momentum up through out the race, and when I knew I had a big enough lead I let off and just cruised to the finish line another P1 in class with fastest lap, couldn’t have done much more.
While on the podium for the second time that day, I was also awarded ‘driver of the day’ trophy, it really was the perfect race weekend. Overall this landed me P2 in the production class championship with the most poles in the class and most fastest laps of the season. I have learned so much over the past year in the various championships I’ve competed in and I feel like I have ironed out some things that needed improving from my first year of racing. A big thank you to everyone who came down to the wet Snetterton to watch. And also to all the people who have helped me this year and to all members of club 28.
I’m looking forward to next season, and what challenges that brings.
